Curriculum

How it Works:

Primer A & B | Primer Level | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4

The Bastien Piano Basics curriculum is a comprehensive and well-structured piano method designed to guide students from the very beginning stages through to early intermediate proficiency. Spanning five levels, from Primer to levels 1 through 4, it integrates four core components: Piano, Theory, Performance, and Technic, each meticulously correlated to reinforce musical concepts and skills.

In my studio, I thoughtfully tailor each student’s journey using the Bastien books based on their unique skill level, attention span, and learning style. For young beginners, we often start with Primer A or B to gently build confidence, using fun songs and colorful illustrations to make learning joyful and accessible. As they grow, we move through the levels at a pace that feels natural, sometimes blending books across levels to reinforce skills or keep things fresh and engaging. Whether we’re diving into Theory to explore musical patterns, building finger strength with Technic, or celebrating a favorite piece in the Performance book, the flexibility of the Bastien series allows me to create a warm, family-focused environment where progress is personal and music becomes a lifelong friend.

Primer A: Piano, Theory & Technic

Purpose: Primer A introduces students to the piano using pre-reading notation and simple finger numbers, focusing on black key groups and the Middle C position.

  • Piano Book: Students begin with familiar songs and exercises that use finger numbers and directional symbols, gradually introducing note names and basic rhythms.

  • Theory & Technic Book: This combined book reinforces concepts from the Piano book through written exercises, games, and simple technic studies, enhancing understanding and coordination.

Primer B: Piano, Theory & Technic

Purpose: Building on Primer A, Primer B introduces reading on the grand staff, new hand positions (such as C and G), and basic musical symbols like sharps and flats.

  • Piano Book: Students expand their note-reading skills and explore new hand positions, preparing them for more complex pieces.

  • Theory & Technic Book: Continuing from Primer A, this book offers exercises and technic studies that support the new concepts introduced, fostering a deeper understanding and improved technical skills.

Piano:

Serving as the central lesson book, the Piano series introduces students to essential musical concepts through a carefully graded sequence. It features a stimulating mix of pop, classical, folk, and contemporary music styles, with full-color illustrations to enhance learning and engagement. The gradual multi-key approach takes students through all 12 keys, promoting a comprehensive understanding of keyboard geography and tonality.

Performance:

The Performance books provide a collection of solos that include a variety of styles such as folk, pop, classical, and original compositions by the Bastiens. These pieces are intended for study and performance, helping students to apply their skills in a musical context and gain confidence through recitals and informal performances.

Technic:

Focusing on the development of technical skills, the Technic books include warm-up exercises and studies by renowned composers like Hanon and Czerny. These exercises aim to build finger strength, agility, and overall pianistic technique, which are essential for expressive and accurate playing.

Theory:

Complementing the Piano books, the Theory series offers written exercises, short pieces, games, and puzzles to solidify understanding of musical concepts. These activities are designed to be enjoyable and reinforce the lessons learned in the Piano books, ensuring a well-rounded musical education.
